We know you are excited for your obstetric ultrasound. It is a thrilling time to see how your pregnancy is progressing. Sonograms are an important tool to evaluate the health of your pregnancy. Please follow the guidelines below to help us obtain the best possible images to provide you the care you need.
Gestational age less than 11 weeks: No preparation necessary.
Gestational age from 11 to 24 weeks: Begin drinking 16 ounces of water 1 hour prior to your ultrasound appointment. Finish drinking 30 minutes prior to your appointment. DO NOT URINATE PRIOR TO STUDY UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
Gestational age 25 weeks or more: No preparation necessary.
With most patients the sonographer will be able to tell the sex of your baby but it depends on the gestational age, the fetus’ position and the shape of your abdomen. Please consider whether you want to know the sex (if possible) and advise the sonographer when you come in for your appointment.
You may bring someone with you for your ultrasound but we do ask you not to bring any children under the age of five.
If you have any questions, please contact our office.
